Your second brain, built right.

The second brain problem is a first brain problem

Building a second brain in the shape of a dashboard that organises resources into categories (AI platform, knowledge type, project favourites, recent conversations) sounds like a solvable problem. No matter how I arrange the categories, though, it always ends up feeling dishevelled. Something about the structure never quite settles.

The question I keep coming back to is whether we've been thinking about the design wrong. The human brain doesn't present you with everything it holds. Retrieval is genuinely difficult by design. To surface something, you need a strong reason: a project you're actively in, a problem pressing enough to pull it up. The exception is the completely random, which the brain surfaces with total indifference: a song from the radio that morning, still looping for the rest of the day.

What that suggests to me is a dashboard built to limit your options, not surface them. Fewer things visible, not more. That constraint would force you to be precise about what your projects are and what they're actually trying to do.

I've built plenty of dashboards that got abandoned for exactly this reason. Too much visible at once leads to overwhelm, then avoidance, then a dashboard that makes you feel behind.
