Why I don't use other people's AI skills
The question of AI skills is debated often. Plenty of skills are available online, on GitHub or in communities built around particular technologies, but the question is always how useful they are for the specific use case you are working on. I've never really used skills created by other people, and I can explain why.
- In my setup, a skill-writing bot stays continuously in touch with my main bot, a network orchestrator.
- Whenever we spot that something in the current setup isn't working, the orchestrator picks it up and the skill gets updated.
- A good example is the Slack skill for my OpenClaw bots, since I prefer to use Slack for communicating with them.
- It never crossed my mind that I could look for skills created by others, since the use cases related to OpenClaw are usually quite specific.
- I checked just now, and there is a Slack skill from OpenClaw's creator, Peter Steinberger, made for exactly this purpose. My own skill has been through so many iterations by now that it covers much more of my use case than the shared one.
What about you? Do you use skills written by other people, and what are your best use cases? How much do you end up rewriting them before they fit your own?
