Too many skills hide the one you need

When there are hundreds of skills and connectors in Claude Code, the system can become confusing for you and for Claude Code alike. Claude Code keeps a listing of skill names and descriptions in context, and loads a skill's full text only when it's invoked. That listing has a budget of about 1% of the context window. Once it overflows, descriptions get dropped, starting with the least-used skills, so even a skill that fits the job may never be matched to it.

  • If the list starts to overwhelm the model, run the /skill-doctor command. It shows each skill's context cost and how often it's used, and flags the ones that have never been invoked.
  • In my setup, agents load a skill only when the job matches.
  • My writing skill comes with a 20-item checklist (an eval, essentially) that scores every draft against an 80% pass gate. Those checks hold even when the model forgets the instructions.
  • Where several design skills overlap, I'd keep one and turn what you judge by eye into a checklist.

Anyone who has built fifty sites in a month already knows what makes one look finished. Write that down and score every draft against it.

Zhenia
